Bulawayo Woman Arrested After Newborn Found in Garden Dies
Police have arrested a 24-year-old woman after a newborn baby was found in a neighbour’s garden and later died in hospital on Sunday, May 3.
Priviledge Ncube, from Nkulumane 5, allegedly gave birth at home around 4 am. Police say she then wrapped the baby boy and left him in a nearby vegetable garden.
The baby was found at about 3 pm after a neighbour heard sounds coming from the garden.
“I thought it was a puppy crying,” the neighbour said. “I was shocked to find a baby covered with leaves and soil.”
The infant was taken to Mpilo Central Hospital but died soon after arrival.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ndlovu said residents helped police find the mother. People in the area had noticed Ncube looked pregnant recently.
“When we spoke to her, she admitted she gave birth that morning and left the baby in the garden,” said Asst Insp Ndlovu.
Neighbours said they heard Ncube in pain during the night.
One resident said Ncube told them she had a stomach ache.
Her boyfriend, who lives with her, said he did not know she was pregnant. “Her stomach was big, but she said she was sick,” he said.
Police are asking people with crisis pregnancies to get help. They also want families to support young women.
Ncube will go to court soon. She faces charges of hiding a birth and exposing an infant.
